Preventing Clandestine Entry
5 Security Tips to Keep Your Vehicles & Cargo Safe
Reported stowaway incidents have surged to their highest level since 2019, according to Border Force data. Is your fleet protected? Is your fleet prepared? Take a look at our best-practice security advice to keep your operations moving.
Undocumented migration continues to pose a significant challenge for the UK. In 2024, authorities detected almost 37,000 attempted illegal entries, while the number of asylum claims reached its highest level since records began in 1979.
Although media attention is often focused on small boat crossings, another growing threat is receiving far less scrutiny. Border Force data shows that stowaway incidents involving commercial vehicles have risen to their highest level since 2019, placing increasing pressure on hauliers operating cross-border routes. A recent report described the threat as “high and unrelenting”, warning that Border Force lacks the resources needed to manage it effectively. In response, the Road Haulage Association (RHA) has called on the Home Office to invest in stronger deterrents and support measures to help operators navigate these challenging conditions.
At the same time, the financial consequences of non-compliance have become more severe. Penalties introduced in 2023 mean hauliers and drivers can face fines of up to £10,000 for each illegal entrant discovered in their vehicle, alongside penalties of up to £6,000 for failing to adequately secure a vehicle against unauthorised access. As enforcement intensifies, ensuring robust vehicle security and compliance procedures is no longer just good practice—it is essential.
Stay Safe & Secure
By implementing these five simple, proactive steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of clandestine entry—protecting both your drivers and your business. Security is not just a legal obligation—it’s a critical part of responsible and professional fleet management.
